Press Release

Tomke Jansen, press spokesperson for Ende Gelände, explains:

“Gas is a risky technology. The war in Iran and Russia’s war against Ukraine show us that fossil gas makes us dependent on and vulnerable to blackmail by autocrats. Importing gas drives up energy prices. But it’s not Reiche, Merz, and Co. who suffer from these high prices—it’s us, the citizens, who have to pay for the gas escalation out of our own pockets. And yet fossil gas is a catalyst for the climate catastrophe. We won’t let that happen. At the end of May, we’ll stand in the way again with a massive protest and say: Ende Gelände! Anyone who wants to burn our future today with yesterday’s energy policies will have to keep counting on us!”

More and more economic experts are warning about dependence on gas and the associated price risks due to the war in the Gulf region and the resulting global supply shortages. Despite these risks, the federal government is sticking to its plans to expand gas infrastructure, thereby contradicting its legally binding climate targets. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) extracted via fracking, on which the government is primarily relying, is considered particularly harmful to the climate. According to international studies, it contributes to global warming one-third more than coal. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Economics is planning about 20 new gas-fired power plants and intends to heavily subsidize their construction. With five power plants already announced, the Ruhr region is a focal point of this expansion of gas infrastructure.

Fran Leitner, also a spokesperson for Ende Gelände, said:

“Katherina Reiche was just a gas lobbyist; now, as a federal minister, she is safeguarding the fossil fuel superprofits of RWE, Uniper, and others at our expense. And she even gets her arguments directly from the gas companies themselves, as was just the case with EnBW. This government and these corporations are part of a system of brutal destruction of nature and exploitation. People are being driven from their land and sensitive ecosystems destroyed for the sake of fracked liquefied natural gas. Reiche is starting the new year with a bang: Under her leadership, the German state-owned company SEFE is now helping Argentina’s “chainsaw president” Milei to tap into one of the world’s largest fracking gas reserves in Vaca Muerta. The people who live there are paying the price. That is why they are resisting. We are fighting alongside them and against the entire fossil-capitalist system. In solidarity and against colonialism!”

From May 27 to 31, 2026, a large climate camp with a diverse program will take place in Hamm in the Ruhr region. Ende Gelände has become known for its mass protests around Germany’s lignite mining areas, which have typically drawn several thousand participants. In recent years, the alliance has repeatedly protested regionally against the expansion of gas infrastructure, for example against the construction of LNG terminals in Brunsbüttel, Wilhelmshaven, and Sassnitz on Rügen, and most recently against a gas drilling rig in Reichling, Bavaria. In the Ruhr region, Ende Gelände is now continuing this resistance with combined forces. For the first time since 2022, the alliance is mobilizing nationwide for a large-scale mass action.
