Mass Action in the Ruhr Area
Now more than ever: End all fossil fuels!
Stop gas-fired power plants! Phase out gas now!
Stop war policies! End neocolonial exploitation! Redistribute wealth from top to bottom!
More gas-fired power plants? Not with us!
After the so called traffic-light coalition government in Germany sank billions into LNG terminals—thereby cementing our dependence on fossil gas until 2048—the CDU-SPD coalition now wants to shell out the next few billion for fossil fuel infrastructure. This time, the plan is to build about 20 new gas-fired power plants to generate ten gigawatts of electricity. Meanwhile, the impacts of the climate crisis are becoming faster and more destructive, and we’ve all known this for a long time: Gas is a catalyst for the climate crisis! The fracked liquefied natural gas (LNG) slated to be burned in the new power plants is actually one-third more harmful to the climate than coal. Every single gas-fired power plant is a climate crime!
That is why we are once again calling for a mass action. Let’s stop the construction of new gas-fired power plants!
Gas is Setting the World On Fire
Fossil fuels are fuels of war. They are a flashpoint in the war in Ukraine, in the U.S. invasion of Venezuela, and in the war waged by Israel and the U.S. against Iran, which is setting the entire Gulf region aflame. In all these criminal wars, fossil fuels themselves become a weapon—a weapon used to commit war crimes. Pipelines are blown up, oil depots set ablaze, refineries and liquefied natural gas plants bombed, while fossil fuel corporations make extra crisis profits and the aggressors’ war chests are filled. Fossil fuels also play a cruel role as a weapon in the genocides of our time. The people of Gaza continue to be systematically cut off from electricity and cooking gas by Israel. Time will tell how far the U.S. will go with its imperial total blockade of energy supplies to Cuba.
Fossil fuels and imperial arms buildup are making the world extremely unsafe. Let’s stop this deadly war policy!
Climate justice can only be achieved on a global scale
The extraction of gas and oil is, in itself, an act of violence. It disproportionately affects Indigenous, racialized, and marginalized communities, as well as the Global South. We call this neocolonial exploitation: land is seized, water is stolen, fracking poisons the soil with chemicals, and those who resist are no longer safe. And all of this for a system that makes a select few ever richer while robbing the majority of humanity of their livelihoods.
We won’t stand for this! Our solidarity knows no borders. We stand in solidarity with everyone who rises up against the neo-colonial status quo.
We’re stopping the fossil fuel rollback by Merz, Reiche & Co.
Fossil fuels are high-risk energy sources. Every liter of gasoline and every cubic meter of gas increases the risk of climate collapse. But the German government’s gas strategy brings even more risks: Fossil gas makes us dependent on authoritarian, blackmailing regimes like Putin’s or Trump’s and their price gouging. If it were up to Blackrock-backed Chancellor Merz and gas lobby Minister Reiche, climate protection would still be scrapped, combustion engines would make a comeback, we’d continue heating with fossil fuels, and even more dirty fracking gas—which destroys people’s livelihoods from Texas in the U.S. to Vaca Muerta in Argentina—would be burned to generate electricity. Yet alternatives have long been available. Renewable energies are safe, clean, and affordable!
Our planet is already on fire! Now it’s a fight for every tenth of a degree. We’re taking the energy transition into our own hands.
We won’t pay for your climate crisis
It’s outrageous: we’re supposed to pay for Reiche’s absurd gas escalation out of our own pockets. While there’s supposedly no money for the 9-euro ticket, a social heating transition, the renovation of rundown schools, or healthcare, Reiche is just handing over billions of our tax money to her old friends at RWE and Uniper to build new gas-fired power plants—and will later pay them a lot of money to operate them, too. On top of that, as tenants, we’re being hit with sky-high bills for electricity and heating. Meanwhile, the fossil fuel corporations are celebrating their crisis profits. This has to stop. That’s why we’re calling for a radical redistribution: We want to nationalize RWE, Uniper, and SEFE. Now!
Expropriate RWE, Uniper, and SEFE. We want renewable energy and a social heating transition—immediately!
We Have 100 Billion Better Ideas
From May 27 to 31, 2026, a large climate camp will take place in Hamm, in the Ruhr region. This is because a particularly large number of new gas-fired power plants are planned for the Ruhr region. Right here, where our struggles have already achieved the phase-out of coal, we want to finally make the strength of the climate justice movement visible once again. At the camp, we want to network, learn from one another, share ideas, cook and eat together, have fun, and show that we have 100 billion better ideas than pouring money into war, weapons, gas, and neocolonial exploitation. We are fighting for a climate-just future and a good life for all. There will be a demonstration and a variety of colorful actions. With a major act of civil disobedience, Ende Gelände will stand up to fossil fuel-dependent, war promoting, and neocolonial conditions.
Join us! Be part of it! Get organized! Together, we’ll make the camp and the actions a huge success! Let’s be the sand in the machinery of fossil capitalism.
