Today around 4,000 climate activists will start from the Ende Gelände protest camp in Viersen to block the coal fields in Rhineland.

Today around 4,000 climate activists will start from the Ende Gelände protest camp in Viersen to block the coal fields in Rhineland. They will depart from the camp in two waves. More activists are expected to arrive at the camp throughout the day, and to start a third wave of blockades tomorrow. The alliance Ende Gelände demands the immediate coal exit and a fundamental system change.

++ Ende Gelände continues its actions in the Ruhr region ++ Hundreds of activists at the Scholven gas-fired power plant site ++ “Gas lobby minister Reiche is escalating the climate crisis” ++ Hamm, May 29, 2026, 12:00 a.m. The Ende Gelände action alliance is continuing its acts of civil disobedience against gas infrastructure and the federal government’s power plant strategy in the Ruhr region. Since 10:45 a.m., hundreds of activists have entered the grounds of the gas-fired power plant in Scholven, where the construction of an additional power plant unit is planned. More groups are still on their way. Since the early morning hours, activists have been blocking operations at Europe’s largest pipeline manufacturer, Europipe AG, in Mülheim, and at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hütte in Troisdorf. According to information from the action alliance, a total of about 1,500 activists in their white painter’s suits are participating. They aim to achieve a phase-out of all fossil fuels.
